Your Car

My heart always starts racing before green light turns to red,
It acts as a sad reminder that at once we could be dead,
And that reminds me of the way you left.
The way you left us all bereft,
The weekend’s when you’d see me next,
But you couldn’t hang on past Friday despite what you said.
I’m middle-lane driving again,
Pissed-off commuters undertake me as I dawdle to the end,
My side tail lights a devilish red,
Whilst your side beamers white like the heavens, ‘cause that’s where you’ve head.
If only I believed in that concept,
I think the skies is what you would’ve wanted,
Though I’m told that you were agnostic,
At least that’s what Dad says.
God damn I wish I knew you mum.
This is kinda your song.
You explained to me what cancer was in a Peugeot 106,
I don’t remember much else from age 10 but that detail fucking sticks.
I feel like sobbing uncontrollably just like I did in your car,
But my windscreen wipers are broke, I won’t be able to see very far.
I loved our trips to Fleet Service Station,
I’m only half joking when I say it was our favourite holiday destination,
I saw a t-shirt there today that had “legalise dreams” written on the front,
At first I laughed out loud, then thought that’s relatable as fuck.
‘cause,
Every night you turn up in my dreams,
But next morning I forget everything,
I just wish I didn’t have to create,
My picture of you with someone else’s paint.
With someone else’s paint.
